Acute Appendicitis in pregnancy

Abstract
The motality rate due to acute appendicitis has been improved markedly by operative treatment and antibiotics . But in appendicitis during pregnancy, the maternal and perinatal motality are still higher than other population resulting from error in initial diagnosis and delay in proper management for obstetric patients. Twenty-two cases of acute appendicitis complicating the pregnancy who received treatment in severance hospital during last 17 years from 1958 to 1975 are analyzed. The results are as following. 1. There were 22 cases of acute appendicitis in pregnancy among 22781 deliveries between sep .1, 1958 to aug 31. 1975 at severeance Hospital an incidence of 0.097% 2. More frequent under 30 years of age and multiparous women. 3. Error in initial diagnosis was 40.9%. 4. Perforated appendicitis resulted term or premature delivery in 44.4% in nonperforated appedicitis there was premature delivery in 7.7% and sponataneous abortion 7.7%, 15.4% in total. 5. There was no correlation between induction of labor and duration of operative procedure. 6. Perinatal loss was 18%.
